Canadian Friends of the Ukrainian Jewish Community
Jews have lived in the Ukraine since the 8th century. Here, European Jewish civilization flourished; here, the Hassidic movement was born; here, Hitler’s henchmen murdered over one million; here, the Communists tried to outlaw Jewish religion and culture. Ironically, when the Communist regime fell, many Ukrainian Jews were left vulnerable and impoverished. Hardest hit were the seniors whose pensions were rendered worthless and orphans who were left to beg on the streets in order to survive. In 1995, the Jewish Community of Kiev established a welfare network that provided care for all those who could not care for themselves. The Canadian Friends of the Ukrainian Jewish Community (CFUJC) was founded in 2007 in order to help the Jewish Community of Kiev finance this welfare network and run its full roster of Jewish social, religious and educational activities. Today, CFUJC’s main projects include a group home for orphaned and abused children, a medical clinic and a soup kitchen for the elderly. The 100,000 Jews living in the Ukraine today deserve an opportunity to flourish again.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN
